What is the Web ?
----------------
The Internet
------------
The Internet was originally constructed by the American military
to provide a rapid and flexible communications network. The
internet is essentially the hardware that carries, stores and
manipulates the information. Each computer on the internet is
allocated a unique number, or "dotted four", so-called because the
number looks something like "343.432.664.23". Most of the computers
that are integrated into the internet are powerful machines capable
of controlling the continous flux of data. These computers are
generically known as servers. It is possible to take a smaller
computer and temporarily connect it to the internet via a telephone
line to a server and hence to the internet.
The World Wide Web (WWW)
------------------------
The Web was concieved as a means of transfering a wide range of
information types seamlessly on the internet, the idea being that it
would be possible to allow small computers rapid access to all types
of information on the internet. The information was then to be
displayed in a coherent form.
HTML
----
HTML (Hypertext Markup Language) was devised as the means of
arranging that information coherently. HTML lets the coder easily
mix graphics, text, and so on.
